V. Authority and Responsibility for Student Conduct Code Violations

  1. Vice President for Student Life
The vice president for student life is responsible for overall coordination of rules and regulations regarding student discipline for misconduct covered by this Student Conduct Code. The vice president may assign a designee to act in his or her stead.

  2. Associate Vice President for Student Life
The associate vice president for student life is the person appointed by the vice president for student life to impose sanctions against students who are found, through a Student Conduct Board hearing, to have engaged in student misconduct.

  3. Associate Dean for Student Conduct Administration
The associate dean for student conduct administration is the person appointed by the vice president for student life to be primarily responsible for investigating an allegation of student misconduct. The associate dean for student conduct administration, or his or her designee, conducts preliminary conduct hearings and administrative hearings and, in such cases, imposes sanctions against students who are found to have engaged in misconduct. If a Student Conduct Board Hearing is held, the associate dean for student conduct administration, or his or her designee, presents to the Student Conduct Board the evidence against the accused student.

  4. Student Conduct Board
The Student Conduct Board is responsible for hearing the evidence relating to a charge of student misconduct brought before it and for rendering a decision based on the evidence presented. The Student Conduct Board is composed of ten faculty and four student members appointed as follows:

    1. Faculty Members
      1. A Student Conduct Board chair appointed from the faculty by the president to a one-year term.

      2. A Student Conduct Board vice chair appointed from the faculty by the president to a one-year term. The Student Conduct Board chair and vice chair may not be from the faculty of the same school.

      3. Eight faculty members, one each appointed for a one-year term by the deans of the schools not represented by either the chair or the vice chair. The faculty members of the Student Conduct Board must be selected one from each school and the University Libraries (no representative is appointed by the Graduate School because its faculty hold appointments in the other schools and colleges). Faculty members serving on the Student Conduct Board may be reappointed to successive one-year terms.

    2. Student Members
The four student members of the Student Conduct Board are appointed by the student body president to one-year terms.

The Student Conduct Board is presided over by the chair of the Student Conduct Board, or in his or her absence, the vice chair. The chair is in charge of the hearing and has broad discretion. The chair shall exercise control over the conduct of all persons participating in the hearing and direct the initial questioning to the student conduct officer and the accused student and their witnesses. The chair shall act as a hearing officer by developing the facts and evidence necessary to enable the board to make a decision as to whether or not an act of misconduct has been committed. In so doing, the chair may exclude irrelevant, immaterial, and unduly repetitious evidence.
